My approach and areas of focus

How I can help

  • Anxiety & Overthinking

Anxiety can make us feel like we are constantly on alert, worrying endlessly, tense, and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Often we will avoid things that make us anxious, which causes our world to shrink and prevents us from living freely and fully. I have 15 years of neuroscience research background focused on understanding how the brain controls anxiety and why avoidance actually keeps us stuck in the long run. I use this knowledge to help clients better understand the root causes of their anxiety, identify and rework old patterns that are no longer serving them, and build skills to live a richer, fuller life that isn’t controlled by fear.

  • Trauma & Survivors of Sexual Assault

Trauma often leaves us feeling alone, disconnected from others, on edge with an overwhelmed nervous system. I have several years’ experience as a Certified Sexual Assault Counselor supporting survivors. It can be hard to find someone to trust and work through this trauma, and it is important to me that you feel safe in our work together. We’ll go at your pace, and you get to decide what we do and don’t discuss. We will work on processing your trauma to alleviate post-traumatic symptoms, but also to understand the deep impacts trauma has had on your life and how to regain a sense of safety and connection.

  • Career Changes & Burnout

Hustle culture leaves so many of us feeling burned out, inadequate, and dissatisfied in our careers. Perhaps you have learned to equate your identity and self-worth with your productivity. This leads us to rely on external feedback to maintain our self-esteem, which can take a significant toll on our mental health. My lived experience in a high-pressure work environment prior to changing careers informs my work with other professionals who are experiencing a toxic work environment, burnout, imposter syndrome, or questioning whether they are truly working in alignment with their values. I consider the significant impact on our identities and how you can regain a sense of fulfillment and purpose in your career.

  • Relationships & Family Dynamics

We all develop frameworks for how to relate to other people rooted in experiences in our family of origin. Sometimes these blueprints for how to be in relationship with others no longer serve us as we grow up, and we want to develop healthier patterns. I have training in family systems theory and emotion-focused therapy, which can help you improve communication and move out of frustrating entrenched patterns of interaction. Family therapy is not about blaming any one person, but rather examining non-judgmentally how each person plays a role in the dynamic you are looking to change. I particularly enjoy working with adult children looking to heal old wounds and improve their family relationships.

My approach

It takes a lot of courage to seek therapy and I’m glad you’re here. You may be feeling like something is wrong but aren’t quite sure why. Perhaps others see you as successful and accomplished, but to you it feels like something is missing. Maybe you have been quietly shouldering the weight of daily anxiety, stress, or self-doubt that can often cause our worlds to shrink. Even if you know exactly what you want to change, it can feel daunting to figure out how to get where you want to be.

I will meet you in that place and we will work together to dig our way out. Therapy can help us identify patterns in our lives that keep us stuck in ways that are often outside of our awareness. Together we will explore how past experiences, relationships, and your current situation may be impacting your mental health. Releasing old patterns that are no longer serving you will make space for the change you want to see.

My neuroscience background gives me a unique lens into how the brain and body interact in mental health. I integrate this behavioral knowledge with a more depth-oriented form of psychodynamic therapy that has the goal of cultivating greater self-awareness and emotional resilience. I believe that the path to lasting change and growth involves addressing the root cause of your pain, and not just putting a band-aid on your symptoms.

I bring my authentic self to our sessions and care about creating a space where you feel safe and affirmed in your identity. I value working with people from diverse backgrounds, incorporate feminist and multicultural theories, and am sensitive to the impact that systemic inequities, oppression, and power dynamics can have on mental health and in the therapeutic relationship.

I know it can be hard to take the first step to reach out to a therapist. You are welcome here as you are, however unprepared or imperfect it may feel. Call, email, or text me to schedule a free, no commitment 15-minute consultation!
